iHeart Boston’s 101.7 The Bull raised more than $463,000 during its eighth annual Country Cares for St. Jude Radiothon. In addition to the radiothon, the station organized a benefit with artists Brian Kelley, Chase Matthew, Kassi Ashton and Drew Baldridge. Over the past eight years, 101.7 The Bull has raised over $3.5 million for St. Jude.

Hearst’s ABC affiliate WCVB-TV Boston Meteorologist Danielle Vollmar brought an ambulance full of teddy bears to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital on December 21, where she gave a bear to each patient. Vollmar has run the Boston Marathon several times as part of the hospital’s marathon team, in order to raise money for the facility.
Hearst Television’s ABC affiliate WCVB-TV Boston has been named the official media partner of the Medal of Honor Society Convention, in Boston Sept. 15-20. WCVB will air PSAs and promotional stories in advance of the event. In addition, WCVB anchors Randy Price (veteran of the US Air Force) and Phil Lipof will emcee two of the convention’s high profile events. Approximately 50 of the nation’s 79 living Medal of Honor Recipients will attend the convention.
Telemundo owned-and-operated WNEU-TV Boston began airing local newcasts at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. in August. "Noticiero Telemundo Boston" is the latest in a series of efforts to bolster local news coverage at Telemundo stations nationwide. The newscasts broadcast from a state-of-the-art newsroom and feature on-screen graphics and visuals that complement WNEU’s digital properties. “We are ecstatic that Telemundo Boston will debut its first-ever live and locally produced weekday newscasts to help fill the void for Spanish-language viewers that has existed in our market for far too long,” General Manager Mike St. Peter said in a statement.

Skip Finley, marketing and sales director for the Vineyard Gazette Media Group, set up a low power radio station at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. The station will be part of the school’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program and will generate funds for college scholarships. Students will survey community leaders to discover important issues and plan for content changes. “It teaches kids not just how to communicate but also how to do so succinctly, especially given modern technology like podcasts or web streaming that forces kids to think how to boil something down and get it across,” said Ty Hobbs, director of the CTE program.
Hearst Television’s ABC affiliate WCVB-TV Boston presented seven high school seniors with scholarships worth up to $7,000. Over a three-day period from Feb. 13-15, the station’s mobile and desktop news websites garnered 2.7 million visits, 11.9 million page views and 180,000 total live streams.
Greater Media’s WROR-FM Boston’s holiday CD raised more than $15,000 for Christmas in the City, an organization that benefits homeless families in Boston. Titled “The World’s Greatest Christmas Album,” the CD is a collection of all of the best holiday songs on WROR-FM’s morning show, Loren and Wally.
Greater Media’s WKLB-FM Boston was recognized for its support of Tufts Floating Hospital for Children when the hospital opened The Country 102.5 Healing Garden, named in honor of WKLB-FM. The Country 102.5 Healing Garden is an outoor space designed to provide relief for pediatric patients and their families during hospital stays. Country music artists, including Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts, have performed in the garden to lift the spirits of patients and families, as well as raise funds for the hospital. Hunter Hayes’ recent performance raised $40,000. "We are so proud and humbled to have the Healing Garden named after Country 102.5," said WKLB-FM Program Director Mike Brophey. "Funds we helped raise were used to reconstruct and beautify the area for patients and their families to enjoy..."
CBS Television owned-and-operated WBZ-TV Boston hosted the first debate between the 2014 Massachusetts gubernatorial candidates - Charlie Baker, Martha Coakley, Evan Falchuk, Scott Lively and Jeff McCormick - on Oct. 6. Baker and Coakley squared off twice more: on Oct. 21 on WGBH Educational Foundation’s PBS affiliate WGBH-TV Boston; and again on Oct. 28 on Hearst Television’s ABC affiliate WCVB-TV Boston, Boston University’s WBUR-FM Boston and Bloomberg Radio.
CBS-owned WBZ-TV and WBZ-AM Boston were recognized for their coverage of the Boston Marathon bombings. As the only local TV station covering the Boston Marathon, WBZ-TV was positioned to provide coverage as it unfolded from the bombing scene. WBZ-AM quickly went into wall-to-wall coverage, interviewing local public safety officials, law enforcement and elected officials to help explain what was happening. As the Peabody Award website notes, WBZ-TV and WBZ-AM received the recognition "for becoming go-to sources, not just for their city but for a stunned nation."
Cumulus Radio and Westwood One’s Boston cluster recently rallied around a local little boy, Danny Nickerson, who is battling a rare form of cancer. Danny’s sixth birthday wish was to receive a "big box of birthday cards." Danny’s cancer is inoperable and since his diagnosis last October, he has not been able to attend kindergarten. The local Cumulus and Westwood One stations encouraged listeners to send cards to Danny, who says he sometimes gets lonely, but cards with his name on them make him happy. The request went viral, and by Danny’s birthday, he received over 100,000 cards, along with thousands of gifts and messages on Facebook.
Entercom’s WAAF-FM Boston hosted the "Rise Up Against Hunger" event in December. For three days, two WAAF-FM personalities "rose up" on lifts and lived on platforms suspended in the sky in an effort to raise funds for the Greater Boston, Worcester County and New Hampshire Food Banks. For more than two decades, the station’s personalities have enlisted themselves in physically challenging stunts to encourage listeners to support area food banks. This year’s event raised $80,255, enough to provide 189,401 meals to those in need.

CBS-owned WBZ-TV and WBZ-AM Boston partnered with The Boston Globe to host the first televised debate between Massachusetts state Representative Marin Walsh and Council at-Large John Connolly, who were running for Boston’s mayoral seat. The live debate was broadcast from the WBZ-TV studios and moderated by the station’s political analyst Jon Keller and the Globe’s reporter Akilah Johnson. Entercom Communications’ WEEI-FM Boston partnered with the Boston Red Sox to host the 12th annual Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon to support the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute. The two-day event raised more than $3.3 million for adult and pediatric cancer care and research. Broadcasting live from Fenway Park, the fundraiser featured interviews with Dana-Faber patients, the doctors and nurses who have treated them and guest appearances from local celebrities and athletes. Since 2002, WEEI-FM has helped raise more than $34 million for the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute.
Entercom’s WEEI-FM Boston donated 1,000 Red Sox tickets to first responders and others affected by the Boston Marathon bombing. "We are forever grateful for their heroism and hope this small gesture brings a smile to some faces across Boston," Entercom said in a statement. Tickets went to Boston police, fire and EMS workers; Boston Athletic Association; Dorchester, Arlington and Medford communities; Massachusetts State Police; Massachusetts National Guard and Boston area hospitals.
CBS Broadcasting’s WBZ-TV Boston hosted the first of three televised debates with US Senate candidates Democrat Edward J. Markey, a longtime congressman, and Republican challenger Gabriel E. Gomez. The debate also aired on WBZ-AM and streamed online. WGBH Educational Foundation’s WGBY-TV, LIN Media’s WWLP and three other stations aired the second debate, which covered the national deficit, minimum wage, gay marriage, gun control, Social Security and Roe v. Wade. WGBH-TV aired the final debate on June 18.
Cape Cod Broadcasting educated listeners on the environmental ramifications of medicine disposal and teen prescription abuse. Stations promoted the DEA’s Drug Take Back on April 27, during which people could dispose of expired and unused medications. Last September, the free, anonymous service netted 244 tons of drugs at 5,200 sites nationwide. "Our goal is to increase awareness here on the Cape, reduce youth substance abuse, and protect our environment," said Cape Cod Broadcasting’s Kim Lucas.
Kenny Chesney worked with Greater Media’s WKLB-FM Boston to provide prosthetics to amputees after the Boston Marathon bombings. He started the Spread the Love Fund with a sizable donation, including proceeds from downloaded single sales of "Spread The Love," so the Boston Medical Center can supply prosthetics, fittings, ongoing care and physical therapy. "It’s hard to imagine a world where taking your children to school, going to the movies, or witnessing something as iconic as the Boston Marathon is a dangerous thing to do," Chesney said. "For me, I want to help give these people as much of their lives back as possible."
Entercom, which owns WEEI-FM, WRKO-AM and WAAF-FM in Boston, donated $25,000 to One Fund Boston. WAAF-FM morning show host Greg Hill was holding a fundraiser for his foundation a few blocks from the finish line when the bombs exploded. His event raised $11,000, which he donated to the bombing victims.
Greater Media Boston suspended all on-air contesting for the week after the bombing, instead donating $8,000 of prize money to One Fund Boston. To support Mayor Menino’s "Boylston Strong" effort, the stations offered free roundtrip upper deck trolley rides to Boylston Street on April 28th. Greater Media’s Boston stations include WBQT-FM, WKLB-FM, WMJX-FM, WBOS-FM and WROR-FM.
Hearst Television’s WCVB-TV Boston coverage reached two-thirds of Boston households during the capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect. In a broadcast editorial, WCVB-TV President and General Manager Bill Fine praised first responders, honored the wounded and their families and encouraged donations to One Fund Boston. Following the tragedy WCVB-TV promoted "’Boylston is Back" on-air, online and in an e-blast to 80,000 subscribers. The campaign encouraged residents to spend at least $25 on Boylston Street on April 27, as the mandatory ’city shutdown’ on April 19 cost an estimated $250 - $333 million.
Radio united Boston after the Boston Marathon bombing. Entercom’s WEEI-FM distributed thousands of "Boston Strong" signs, which fans waved during a tribute at the Red Sox home game with the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park. Boston radio stations also observed a moment of silence on April 22 at 2:50 pm, the exact time when the bombs went off a week before. "As first informers in times of crisis, broadcasters want to take this opportunity to salute the first responders and the many unsung heroes who do so much during emergency situations," said NAB President Gordon Smith.
Greater Media’s WTKK-FM Boston raised over $100,000 in its 5th Annual Fisher House Radiothon. The proceeds help to build Fisher Houses across the country, allowing families of wounded and ill veterans can be close to their loved ones during their hospitalization in a comfortable, home-like environment. "From Afghanistan to Yemen, we send our troops into harm’s way every day. When harm does come, the Fisher House lets us take care of them," said Michael Graham. On air guests included Fisher House families, Senator Scott Brown, several actors, comedians and athletes.
Entercom’s WAAF-FM Boston hosted "WAAF’s Rise Up Against Hunger." Cranes lifted on-air personalities LB and Spaz onto sky-high platforms, where they lived for three days to raise money for the Greater Boston, Worcester County and New Hampshire food banks. WAAF-FM’s Greg Hill stayed on air around the clock for the three days to encourage donations and listener visits. For the past 20 years, WAAF-FM personalities have engaged in various stunts for charity. This year’s promotion raised more than $76,000.
Hearst Television’s WCVB-TV Needham, MA aired a 30-minute congressional debate between Democratic U.S. Rep. John Tierney and Republican challenger Richard Tisei in late October. The debate covered a range of topics, including gun control, health care and taxes. The candidates exchanged heated words over controversies involving Tierney and his family.
Quincy stations aired 12 debates and produced "Candidates and Issues" segments. Quincy’s 11 news stations invited 461 candidates to record a message to voters that aired unedited on-air and online. Of the 461 candidates, 193 (42 percent) chose to participate. These stations aired and/or co-produced live debates for senatorial, congressional and gubernatorial races: WVVA Bluefield, W.V., WREX-TV Rockford, Ill., WGEM-TV (commercial free) WKOW-TV, KTIV Sioux City, Iowa, WXOW-TV La Crosse, Wis., WAOW-TV Wausau, Wis. and KTTC Rochester, Minn. Those stations, plus WSJV South Bend, Ind., KWWL Waterloo, Iowa, and WQOW-TV Eau Claire, Wis., aired "Candidates and Issues" segments.
Country music star Carrie Underwood recently joined Greater Media’s WKLB-FM Boston to visit young patients and their families at Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. Underwood’s visit was part of WKLB-FM’s Country Music Healing Tour, brings leading country music artists to perform and meet with young patients at the hospital. The goal of the program is to lift the spirits and aid in the healing process of children with serious illnesses.
CBS Television’s WBZ-TV Boston announced a debate between U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren. The candidates have also agreed to another televised debate hosted by a consortium of media outlets in Springfield. CBS Radio’s WBZ-AM and Greater Media’s WTKK-FM are working with the candidates to schedule radio debates. "It is of paramount importance that the people of Massachusetts be able to hear from both candidates for U.S. Senate," said Mindy Myers, Warren’s campaign manager.
Greater Media’s WTKK-FM Boston helped the Fisher House build "homes away from home" for the families of wounded American troops. WTKK-FM’s 4th annual Fisher House Radiothon raised over $120,000 for Fisher House, which enables family members to be close to their loved ones during hospitalization in a safe, home-like environment. The Fisher House Foundation helps family members of hospitalized active-duty service members and veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Additionally, the Foundation plays a crucial role in helping veterans recover from serious wounds.
