Lee Greenwood Joins Huntsville Students for Special Holiday Message

WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Ala., teamed up with singer-songwriter Lee Greenwood and local elementary, middle and high school choirs to record a special holiday message to be aired on newscasts throughout the season. More than 1,400 students participated in the effort to spread this holiday message of peace.

Tennessee Legislature Recognizes Local Broadcasters

KGO-AM Adds Local News

Cumulus’ KGO-AM San Francisco launched The Morning Show With Nikki Medoro on March 2. The new, locally-produced show replaces the nationally syndicated “Armstrong and Getty Show.”

“Her upbeat and engaging personality makes her the perfect fit to take over mornings on KGO,” said Market Manager Doug Harvill. “She’ll team with veteran news anchor Bret Burkhart to deliver an entertaining, informative, and interactive morning show.”

WRMJ-FM’s App Offers Local News

Western Illinois Broadcasting’s WRMJ-FM Aledo, Ill., demonstrated its commitment to deliver local news and programming content by launching a station app in mid-January. The small-market station has broadcast local news, high school sports and weather to the community for 40 years.

The WRMJ app allows the station to evolve, while maintaining its local focus. The app will provide its audience with a unique way to hear familiar voices, access local news and listen to music wherever they are.

"You have to change with the time, even in a small market like ours,” said General Manager John Hoscheidt. “But we give them local flavor.”

Nexstar Commits to Local News

Nexstar Media Group’s CBS affiliate KOIN-TV Portland, Ore., will begin airing a new local morning show on February 3. The show "KOIN News AM Extra" will cover local and breaking news, sports, weather, traffic and life in the Portland area.

“Offering a local news alternative to viewers in the morning, at a time period predominantly filled with network news, enables us to connect with local viewers in a new and unique way and deepens our engagement with the local community,” said General Manager Patrick Nevin.

In addition, Nexstar’s CW affiliate KRCW-TV’s Portland, Ore., expanded its evening news program in October from 30 minutes to an hour.

“Nexstar’s television stations are deeply committed to serving their local communities with informative, engaging, and exclusive local content,” said Nexstar President Tim Busch.

WADL Premieres Investigative Evening Newscast

Adell Broadcasting’s WADL-TV Detroit premiered on January 21 a new evening newscast with a focus on local investigative reporting. The weeknight program, “News Now with Kevin Dietz,” features two long investigative reports per night.

“I was born and raised in this town and I’ve been an investigative reporter for 25 years,” said Program Host Kevin Dietz. “I know the community and will be talking about topics important to the people that live here.”

WRAZ Airs ’Black Country’ Documentary

Capitol Broadcasting Company’s (CBC) Fox affiliate WRAZ Raleigh aired on June 19 the documentary “Black Country.” CBC partnered with Black Country Productions and first-time filmmaker Keyetta Mangum as part of its mission to develop long-form original programming for local and national distribution. “Black Country” showcases an African American culture dedicated to a country lifestyle, including horses, trail rides, bush track racing and raising younger generations to value nature.

“The story of Black Country is one that needs to be told. It’s a vibrant part of our community that is invisible to most people, and it’s not just in North Carolina,” said Shelly Leslie, who heads Capitol’s original programming development unit and is executive producer of Black Country. “We’re also proud to provide a platform for diverse voices.”

WHO-HD Wins 28 Awards for Excellence

Tribune Broadcasting’s WHO-HD Des Moines won 28 awards for journalism excellence on April 13, 2019. The station received the "Best Newcast" first place honor at the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association annual awards for coverage of the Molly Tibbetts case, in addition to 10 other accolades. The Iowa Broadcast News Association awarded WHO-HD 17 awards, including "Overall Excellence" honors for best news operation state-wide.

Univision Expands Local News Apps to Seven Markets

Univision Communications launched on January 22 new local news apps in seven markets: Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco. The mobile apps provide breaking news notifications, weather forecasts and local programming.

WEAU Creates Memorial Scholarship

Gray’s NBC affiliate WEAU-TV Eau Claire, Wis., raised $83,000 on December 4 in memory of three fourth grade Girl Scouts and a parent who were killed by an impaired driver as they volunteered for a highway cleanup. The money will be used for a memorial scholarship in their honor.

“WEAU adopted the mantra ‘Community First’ in 2009,” said Creative Services Director Andrew Felix. WEAU’s commitment to community goes beyond a slogan; it reflects how we operate as a station.”

WTIC Airs News Stories About Hope

Tribune’s Fox affiliate WTIC-TV Hartford, Conn., airs a segment called “Make-A-Wish Stories of HOPE,” every Tuesday at 10 p.m., with rebroadcasts on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. They highligh local kids, their families and the communities that help grant wishes. These wishes have physical and emotional benefits that increase chances of survival for critically ill kids.

WPIX Broadcasts From 18 Neighborhoods

Tribune’s CW affiliate WPIX-TV New York City is broadcasting its morning news from 18 different zip codes in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut every Friday this summer. “Zip Trips” launched May 4 at Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx, near Yankee Stadium. “Taking a local TV newscast away from the studio to broadcast it live from a neighborhood is a huge undertaking… It’s risky, challenging and expensive,” said Paul Greely of TVNewsCheck. “But it’s also inventive, fun, unpredictable and very viewer-friendly.”

KSWB-TV Expands 10 p.m. Newscast

Tribune’s FOX affiliate KSWB-TV San Diego expanded its10 p.m. newscast from 60 to 90 minutes, beginning April 23.

Univision New York Holds Public Forum about Gun Control

Univision’s WXTV-TV and WADO-AM New York, in partnership with the Office of the Bronx Borough President, the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, News 12 The Bronx, BronxNet and El Diario NY hosted “Enough is Enough, Ni Una Muerte Más” on April 17. The bilingual public forum in English and Spanish addressed concerns about gun laws in the nation, New York state, and New York City. WAND-TV Adds Two Weekend Newscasts

Block Communication’s NBC affiliate WAND-TV Decatur, Ill., is adding two weekend newscasts, known as “Weekend Daybreak,” that will air on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Premiering on February 10, Caryn Eisert and Meredith Juliet will co-anchor the hour-long shows. “Viewers want news and weather all the time and by bringing news to weekend mornings, we are providing them what they are looking for,” said Ricky Joseph, WAND-TV president and general manager.

Telemundo Expands Local and National Midday Newscasts

Telemundo-owned television stations KVEA Los Angeles, WNJU New York, WSCV Miami, KTMD Houston, KXTX-TV Dallas-Fort Worth, WSNS-TV Chicago, KVDA San Antonio, KTAZ Phoenix, KHRR Tucson and KTLM Rio Grande Valley, increased their news output, adding daily local newscasts at noon Monday-Friday. Telemundo also launched a new weekday national newscast, “Noticias Telemundo, Mediodia” to air at 12:30 p.m.

WWNY-TV Watertown Expands News in 2018

United Communications Corp.’s CBS affiliate WWNY-TV Watertown, N.Y. launched a 5 p.m. newscast titled “First at 5” in early 2018. The new broadcast will air live weekdays from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

“Our news expansion demonstrates our commitment not only to true localism, but to covering the issues most important to our viewers in all areas of Northern New York,” said WWNY-TV General Manager Ed Bassler.

“With the addition of a 5 p.m. news, 7 News will be presenting more than 27 hours of local news a week.,” said WWNY-TV News Director Scott Atkinson. “That’s a big, expensive commitment for a small TV station, but it’s one we’re proud to make.”

KEYC-TV Mankato Adding A.M. Newscasts In 2018

United Communications Corp.’s CBS affiliate KEYC-TV Mankato, Minn., added an hour-long morning newscast in January 2018. “KEYC News 12 This Morning” will air live weekdays from 6 to 7 a.m.

Seattle Anchor Shares Personal Story About Sexual Abuse

Tenga’s NBC affiliate KING-TV Seattle aired a seven-minute segment on October 16, prompted by the #MeToo movement, in which anchor Amity Addrisi shared her story of sexual abuse. Addrisi told a narrative about a little girl who was sexually abused by older cousins in a basement in exchange for candy. She later revealed that girl was her and that she hid her story for decades.

WMAZ Partners on Reporting Initiative

TEGNA’s CBS affiliate WMAZ-TV Macon, Ga., created a local reporting partnership with Mercer University’s Center for Collaborative Journalism and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Knight Foundation awarded Mercer University a $2 million grant to expand local television news reporting, enhance their innovative journalism education model and increase community engagement initiatives. The Center for Collaborative Journalism will add a full-time reporter who will work with WMAZ and students to produce local stories that will appear on-air and online. “Like the Center and Knight Foundation, we believe that quality, trusted, fact-based journalism can make a difference and serve the greater good,” said WMAZ President and General Manager Jeff Dudley. “It is our hope that through this partnership, students feel better prepared to start their journalism careers while understanding the important role we play in our communities.”

Univision Launches New Midday Newscast

On April 17, Univision Communications Inc. launched local versions of “Edición Digital” (Digital Edition), the first newscast conceived, designed and produced for simulcast on digital platforms and live broadcast television. The new 30-minute midday newscasts take a hyper-localized approach to covering a wide range of topics, such as current events, lifestyle and trending stories on social media. “Edición Digital” is currently available in California, Dallas, Miami, and New York on local Univision stations and websites.

Univision Arizona and Cronkite School Air ‘Cronkite Noticias’

WMAR Secures First TV Exclusive with Officer Charged in Freddie Gray Death

Scripps’ ABC affiliate WMAR-TV Baltimore News Investigative Reporter Brian Kuebler talked with Baltimore City Police Sergeant Alicia White in the first televised interview of any of the six officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray. The interview aired November 17 at 11:00 p.m. followed by additional reports on-air and online. Sgt. White talked about the charges and her feelings toward Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, whom White is suing for defamation and invasion of privacy. “This interview is an important element of how we as a station have worked to share all voices of our community in this polarizing case,” said News Director Kelly Groft.

KCRG Covers Cedar Rapids Floods

Gray Television’s ABC affiliate KCRG-TV Cedar Rapids, IA aired critical flood coverage on September 27. The Cedar River was expected to crest at 23 feet that afternoon, which caused flooding in several neighborhoods throughout the region.

Broadcasters Cover Racial Tensions

On July 7, a sniper opened fire at a protest in Dallas against police violence, killing five officers and wounding seven others. This shooting came within days of violent incidents in Minneapolis and Baton Rouge. Local broadcasters immediately provided wall-to-wall coverage of the situation and forums for solace and discussion in the weeks that followed.

All Access reported that some journalists used their personal vehicles or Uber to travel to the scene and were not able to leave because the crime scene was still active. “The staff remains committed to serving the people of Dallas-Ft. Worth,” Service Broadcastings’ KKDA-AM Director of Operations George Cook told Inside Radio. “I am very proud of the efforts under pressure demonstrated by the K104 Family and the KRNB Smooth Crew.”

- iHeartMedia Dallas also re-imaged to include “#DallasStrong on digital platforms.
- Cumulus Media’s WBAP and KILF-AM went commercial-free and pulled all contesting, jingles and station imaging. Radio Ink interviewed Program Director Tyler Cox about the station’s approach to coverage.
- CBS Radio’s KRLD-AM Dallas aired a special edition of “Weekend Roundup” entirely devoted to the Dallas shootings and the recent police shootings of black men in Baton Rouge and Minnesota.
- ABC aired "America in Crisis: Ambush in Dallas" and a special edition of "20/20."
- CBS "48 Hours" aired a special, "Bringing A Nation Together."
- According to RBR, “Radio One, Inc. stated that it is deeply saddened and troubled by the recent events in our country. There is no doubt that this is a critical moment in our history.”
- A CBS journalist filed a report while down, almost on his stomach. Another was so close to the site where a bomb detonated early on July 8 that viewers could hear the explosion. “It was a pretty harrowing experience but we got solid coverage,” said CBS Dallas President and General Manager Gary Schneider told Broadcasting & Cable.

Stations Provide Solace Following Shootings

Television Stations that held town hall meetings to address racial tensions include:
- TEGNA’s ABC affiliate WFAA-TV Dallas hosted a town hall and also raised $716,000 for the fallen officers in a “Stand United” campaign.
- Cox Media Group’s CBS affiliate KIRO-TV Seattle hosted, aired and streamed a one-hour conversation on July 13.
- TEGNA’s ABC affiliate KVUE Austin aired a video on Facebook, getting almost two million views.
- Raycom’s Fox affiliate WXIX Cincinnati aired special reports and programming throughout the day on July 15, including an hour-long special, “Black, White and Blue: A Community Conversation.” Activists, city leaders and former law enforcement officers came to the station to discuss the nation’s toughest questions and how those issues affect Cincinnati.
- Scripps’ ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV aired “Detroit 2020: Unify Detroit” on July 14.
- Raycom’s CBS affiliate WAFB Baton Rouge held a town hall: “Where Do We Go From Here?”
- TEGNA’s CBS affiliate KHOU-TV Houston hosted a town hall, “Courageous Conversation.” It was intended to last an hour and a half, but continued for four hours.
- Manship Station’s ABC affiliate WBRZ Baton Rouge raised $185,000 in the “Unite for Our Heroes Telethon” on July 28 on WBRZ, WBRZ.com, and Facebook Live to benefit the families of the officers and deputies who were killed or injured. “During this tragic time for our community, we were just trying to find a way, like so many others, that we could help,” said Director Jake Manship.
- TEGNA’s NBC affiliate WGRZ-TV Buffalo aired a half hour special and moderated a on July 18.
- ABC-owned KGO-TV San Francisco hosted a two-hour live town hall “
A Bay Area Conversation.”
- Hearst’s ABC affiliate WCVB Boston aired “5 On: Race in Boston” July 14.
- TEGNA’s ABC affiliate WZZM-TV Grand Rapids, Mich. used the morning drive to hold a community conversation with a project called “LOVE/Hate.”
- Bounce TV and one of its founders, Martin Luther King III, launched an on-air and online initiative asking the Justice Department to require that local law enforcement be trained in de-escalating incidents with African Americans.
- TEGNA’s CBS affiliate WUSA Washington aired “Race: An Honest Conversation” for viewers to discuss the shootings in Baton Rouge, Minneapolis and Dallas. They used the hashtag #9TalksRace.

Radio Stations that held town halls and fundraisers

- Alpha Media’s KMKT-FM Dallas organized a Stop the Music, Stop the Violence” community conversation at its headquarters on July 8 and a forum on July 15. The program aired on WFXE-FM, WOKS-AM, WKZJ-FM, WIOL-FM and WEAM-FM. “The purpose is to open up the phone lines to have a real conversation with the listeners and the citizens of Columbus, Georgia, to give them an outlet to express any of their feelings as to whether the things happening nationally are impacting them locally,” said Business Manager Geniece Granville.
- Alpha Media’s KXL-FM Portland Ore. personality Lars Lawson held a fundraiser for law enforcement on July 15 to benefit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. “We are extremely excited about hosting this event and letting Law Enforcement Officers know that there are many people who truly support them and sincerely appreciate the job they do each day,” said Operations Manager Bruce Collins.
- Summit Media’s WBHK-FM Birmingham hosted a “Silence the Violence Rally” on July 14.

KHOU-TV Receives Multiple Media Awards

ABC Radio Wins Awards for Breaking News

Cumulus’ WABC-AM New York City was recognized by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) with 2016 Murrow Awards for Overall Excellence, Breaking News and Hard News. ABC received won the Breaking News category for its coverage of the San Bernardino Shootings and the Hard News category with its report “Attacks in Paris: One Week Later.”

WVUE New Orleans Recognized by RTDNA

Raycom’s Fox affiliate WVUE New Orleans has earned, for the sixth consecutive year, the prestigious National Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). WVUE won the “News Series” category for Reporter Lee Zurik’s “Swiped: Financial Mismanagement.” Zurik exposed a Louisiana retirement system executive director who spent recklessly on personal trips and meals while squandering nearly $150 million in retiree benefits. The series led to the executive director’s resignation and sweeping institutional changes. WVUE was also recognized in the “Use of Video” category for the weekly “Heart of Louisiana” series produced by Dave McNamara. The winning story featured a nature photographer, the birds at Grand Isle and a behind the scenes look at a Cajun bakery.

WESH-TV Coverage of Orlando Massacre

Hearst’s NBC affiliate WESH-TV Daytona Beach supplemented its wall-to-wall coverage with live breaking news coverage with Spanish captioning on its sister station, Estrella TV Orlando during primetime on June 12. KOLD-TV Launches Spanish Language News App

Hawaiian Station Weighs Sovereignty Debate

Raycom Media’s KHNL/KGMB-TV Honolulu produced a 30-minute special about the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement and its potential impact on the state. The program featured a round-table discussion that included two former Hawaii Governors, John Waihee and Ben Cayetano. WTXF To Debut 11 P.M. Newscast

WLOX-TV Continues Storm Coverage After Lightning Strike

Raycom Media’s ABC affiliate WLOX-TV Biloxi-Gulfport was providing wall-to-wall coverage of severe weather on May 17 when the station was struck by lightning. Station employees continued to inform residents of the weather via Facebook Live and other social media. On-air signals were restored a few hours later.

WFLA Tampa Expands Midday News

Tennessee Broadcasters Deliver Lifeline News and Community Support

The Tennessee Association of Broadcasters recently provided great examples of how the state’s local radio and television stations serve their communities.

Midwest Communications Media contributed 65 hours in donated airtime and raised collected $900,000 for the American Cancer Society. In Knoxville, Scripps Radio Group’s WWST-FM, WKHT-FM, WCYQ-FM and WNOX-FM raised $251,000 for the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

In 2016, Nexstar’s Memphis stations ABC affiliate WATN-TV, CW affiliate WLMT-TV and Fox affiliate WJKT-TV expect to air at least 5,000 hours in investigative journalism, 120,000 hours in news coverage and 100 hours in election coverage. Morris Multimedia’s CBS affiliate WDEF-TV Chattanooga anticipates 200 hours in investigative journalism, 1,400 hours of local news, 200 hours in Emergency Weather coverage and 500 hours dedicated to elections.

Tribune Media’s Fox affiliate KDVR Denver is expanding its early and mid-morning newscasts.
