To encourage kids and families to continue reading while school is out for the summer, Central Texas’ NBC6, owned by Tegna, worked to increase awareness of the summer reading programs that local libraries offer. Free reading challenges, tools and rewards are being offered by libraries in Waco, Belton, Temple, Killeen, Copperas Cove and Salado to prevent loss of reading abilities that can occur over the summer. According to Lauren Spears of the City of Temple, “research indicates that students can lose their reading literacy and competence rates throughout the summer.” The initiatives are intended to encourage lifelong learning, connect locals with library resources, and most importantly, to advance literacy.
