Tribune’s CW affiliate WPIX New York City established the “Fuel My School” project for New York City public schools. Students, teachers and parents from elementary, middle and high schools in the city’s 5 boroughs were invited to submit an essay explaining how their school makes a difference. WPIX announced Brooklyn Gardens Elementary as the winning elementary school and presented Principal Irene Spence with a $5,000 check to be used on school supplies or technology – the items the school cannot afford and feel would make a difference in the lives of their students. “We inspire children to cultivate a love for learning, spark their curiosity to discover their world, motivate them to achieve success, and have fun,” wrote second grade teacher Francheska Cepeda in her submission.
