Gannett’s WFAA-TV Dallas hosted a summer-long campaign to encourage kids to read during summer break. WFAA-TV anchor Shelly Slater led the campaign, called "Shelly’s Summer Bookworms." Every Thursday during the 4 p.m. newscast, Shelly featured a Summer Bookworms segment. She visited recreation centers and camps, donated more than 4,000 books that were collected from WFAA-TV viewers and encouraged students to read. Classes that successfully completed reading assignments were welcomed to tour the station and watch a live newscast.
