The staff at WQKL-FM in Ann Arbor, Mich., braved cold weather and long hours to help bring in a record-setting 258 tons of food during Rockin’ for the Hungry, the area’s largest food drive. For five days, the station broadcast live from outside a local grocery store, greeting community members and announcing donations on air as they came in. The station also gave out prizes, ranging from water bottles to concert tickets, in exchange for pledges and created a page on their Web site. Donated food was given to Food Gatherers, the area’s largest food rescue organization, which has experienced 35 percent increase in demand this year. In a statement to WQKL and Rockin’ for the Hungry’s other partners, Eileen Spring, president and CEO of Food Gatherers wrote, “On behalf of all the people seeking food assistance this year, we are so grateful. When we needed you most, you rose to the challenge."
