What started as a small concert in a 500-seat venue to raise funds for underprivileged children at Christmas now attracts thousands each year. "Kicks 99 Guitar Pull" has become the signature event for WKXC-FM in Augusta, Ga. Proceeds from the concert make up the largest single donation the local United Way receives. This past year, listeners were able to see six of Nashville’s greatest on stage, while helping to make the holidays brighter for children throughout the Central Savannah River Area. The station starts promoting the concert weeks in advance, both on WKXC and television. Tickets sell out within hours. To raise addition funds, the station designs special t-shirts to sell at the concert and auctions off guitars signed by all the featured artists on the air. The combined efforts allowed WKXC to present the United Way with a check totaling more than $25,000 in 2007. WKXC has honored with a 2008 GABBY Award for Community Service by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. T. Gentry, program director for WKXC said, "Having our ’Guitar Pull’ win an award means a lot to us as we are about to celebrate the 10th anniversary of this annual charity event."
