WLJA-FM Supports Toys for Tots

Topic: Youth-Focused Initiatives

WLJA-FM in Jasper, Ga., went above and beyond in its 2007 Toys for Tots Campaign, which spanned 18 counties and involved three different Marine Corps jurisdictions in two states. WLJA committed all available on-air and human resources to the campaign. In addition to airing more than 300 custom promotional announcements over a six-week period, WLJA provided six live remote broadcasts and dedicated two public affairs programs to the drive. The station also put up a billboard on a prominent highway to promote the campaign. To further encourage donations, the station arranged for Santa to make special appearances at Toys for Tots events. To collect as many toys as possible, WLJA staff supplied and maintained drop boxes in locations not covered by the Marine districts. Staff picked up and distributed these toys to the appropriate agencies. WLJA even turned its own studios into a toy drop-off location. At the end of the campaign, the Marines and affiliated agencies informed WLJA that every request for a toy was able to be filled, due in large part to the generosity of the WLJA listeners and WLJA’s support.
