WBAL’s "Puppy with a Purpose" Celebrates America 250

The “Puppy with a Purpose” program from America’s VetDogs and Hearst Television’s WBAL-TV 11 News in Baltimore, Md., trains pups to become service animals for veterans, active-duty service members and first responders with disabilities. The dogs are trained to help those with injuries, PTSD, hearing and/or vision loss and those who may suffer from seizures. The fourth WBAL Puppy with a Purpose was named Gunner, voted by viewers from a slate of America 250-themed names. The name is a nod to the artillery used at Fort McHenry to beat the British troops.

Graham Media Group’s News 10 in Roanoke, Va., is marking America’s 250th anniversary with “Patchwork 250.” The initiative is inspired by Virginia’s history, comprised of many stories like pieces of a patchwork quilt. “On this 250th Anniversary of our Country and our State, WSLS invites you to rediscover Virginia’s past and present, to celebrate our people, heritage, and shared experiences,” the station says.
Sinclair, Inc.’s Up North Live in Traverse City, Mich., put out a call for images to support their America 250 coverage with user-generated content. “Whether it be a difference maker in your community or a local landmark, we want to see your pictures of what you think makes America beautiful!” the station said.
Nexstar Media Group’s 22 News in Springfield, Mass., covered the city of Chicopee’s America 250 inaugural ball, recognizing the collaborative spirit of the community and the importance of public service. “Let’s wear some red, white, and blue and show some pride for this amazing country we all love,” Mayor John Vieu told the station.
