America's Broadcasters: Combatting Misinformation

Who can you turn to for news you can trust? Your local television and radio broadcasters.

These local stations keep you safe during times of crisis and deliver the weather, sports and entertainment you rely on every day. We bring the facts you need to make decisions that matter – when and where you seek it.

To combat the flood of misinformation online and keep Americans informed, broadcasters invest in quality journalism. Broadcast stations and networks have dedicated teams and partners working to fact-check viral stories and claims. For example:

  • CBS News is launching a new unit called "CBS News Confirmed" to investigate misinformation and deepfakes. "Technology is changing at an unprecedented pace," said Wendy McMahon, CEO of CBS' news, stations and media ventures operations. "And the challenges created by the rise of generative AI, fake videos and misinformation are too great for us not to meet head-on."

  • VERIFY, from TEGNA, "is dedicated to helping the public distinguish between true and false information."" Working with TEGNA's 49 newsrooms across the country, the VERIFY team evaluates stories or claims, with a special focus on those submitted by the public.

  • The NBCU Academy from Comcast NBCUniversal is a free, multiplatform education program for developing new skills and advancing careers in journalism, media and tech. It includes extensive tools and resources for topics like media literacy and misinformation.

  • FOX media outlets, including FOX TV Stations, have created a tool, verify.fox, to help users confirm the authenticity of content.

  • Hearst Television partners with FactCheck.org, a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, to produce segments combating misinformation for its stations across the country.

  • News radio reporters use dedicated long-form segments and podcasts to go in-depth on important news stories. Programs like "Looped In: Chicago" from Audacy or the "Philadelphia Community Podcast" from iHeart Media provide diverse perspectives and thorough explorations of stories that impact their communities and the world.

  • Univision News' elDetector was created in 2016 to combat false messages targeting the Hispanic community. The elDetector WhatsApp chatbot from Univision invites users to submit audio, image or text to be verified by the elDetector team.

  • T Verifica is the fact-checking platform of Noticias Telemundo Digital. It is part of the news division of Telemundo, the NBCUniversal Enterprises' Spanish-language television. Their mission is to "verify the accuracy and veracity of claims made by politicians, officials, and other relevant figures in the public sphere." T Verifica also has a dedicated WhatsApp channel.

In today's fast-paced news environment, staying informed can be overwhelming – but broadcasters are here to empower you. Turn to the reliable reporting of broadcast networks and local stations to verify online claims and get news you can trust.
