When freezing temperatures cause the mercury to dip, thousands of children stay warm with outerwear they received from the "Coats for Kids" campaign organized by WTVC-TV in Chattanooga, Tenn. For more than two decades, the station has asked its viewers to donate new or gently used coats, which are then cleaned by local drycleaners and distributed to various agencies, schools and individual families who contact the station. WTVC places posters at drop-off locations, and airs public service announcements and daily news coverage throughout the campaign. In addition, special guests make appearances and appeals for donations on WTVC’s "This-N-That" show. "Coats for Kids" has resulted in more than 22,000 coats over the last three years. In a letter to WTVC, Charles Hughes, executive director of Chattanooga Community Kitchen wrote, "Thanks to you we are able to offer coats to the many homeless children we serve."
