KDKA-AM Helps Needy Listeners Stay Warm

Topic: Neighbors in Need

Low-income families facing harsh temperatures and steep energy costs received a helping hand from KDKA-AM in Pittsburgh, Pa., and its first-ever “Warmathon.” The station partnered with the Dollar Energy Fund Hardship Program, which helps struggling families and the elderly afford electric, gas and water service. During the 30-hour live broadcast, hundreds of volunteers staffed the phone bank and “Pedaled for Power,” keeping a bulb lit by riding a stationary bike. In total, $250,000 was raised, helping more than 700 families in the community stay warm. “We look forward to making this an annual event to help raise money for people and families in need of assistance with their energy expenses,” said KDKA General Manager Michael Young.
